Georgia Historical Society (GHS) is the premier independent statewide institution responsible for collecting, examining, and teaching Georgia history. GHS houses the oldest and most distinguished collection of materials related exclusively to Georgia history in the nation. Chartered by the Georgia General Assembly in 1839, the Georgia Historical Society (GHS) is the state's oldest cultural organization and first and only statewide historical society. GHS is an educational and research institution created to preserve and interpret Georgia history and the state's role in American history through a variety of educational programs, publications, and research services. Headquartered in Savannah with an office in Atlanta, GHS has 6,000 individual members and nearly 200 affiliate chapters.
