Exceptional dogs for exceptional people

Founded in 1975 and headquartered in Santa Rosa, California, Canine Companions for Independence enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly-trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Canine Companions trains four types of assistance dogs to master over 40 specialized commands: Service Dogs, Skilled Companions, Hearing Dogs and Facility Dogs. After completing training, the dogs are teamed with a graduate during an intensive two week training period (Team Training). For the fourth consecutive year, Canine Companions placed over 300 assistance dogs, and in November 2018, the 6,000th assistance dog in the organization's history was placed. All assistance dogs and follow-up services are provided free of charge to recipients. In 2018, the organization implemented a program to serve veterans with PTSD. In the spring of 2019, ground was broken on a new North Central campus that will be located in New Albany, Ohio.
